Substack introduced me to your writing. I went out and bought the book How To Break your own heart...and loved it! Now a subscriber

Adrienne, you have made my day! How lovely. Have you read Secret Keeping for Beginners? That's my personal favourite - along with the NEW one that's out next month in Australia, 2025 in the UK. Where are you based? xxx

Gosh, that's an interesting thought! There are different things I like about each of them. Obviously the new one Would You Rather is my current favourite. You don't need to read them in order. Xxx

In Israel, but originally Ireland. I wrote a post on substack saying thank you, and one of the reasons was because it introduced me to your writing!

I’m very cross with Richard Osman about the Thursday Murder Club. He’s made picking a favourite TMCM as impossible as picking a favourite beatle and it drives me bananas to love them all equal measures 😉

p.s. do you agree? Joyce = John, Elizabeth = Paul, Ibrahim = George and Ron = Ringo

Ha ha this is hilarious. I've never had a problem picking a favourite Beatle.... JOHN LENNON 4 EVA. And I think Joyce is Paul, because she's cosy - Elizabeth is John because she's cool. This was great fun, thank you xxx

Nooooo! Joyce is John because they are both v funny and people adore them, and Elizabeth is Paul by virtue of being good at bossing the rest around and having good technical skills!! (Why am I thinking so deeply about this?)

Ibrahim is mysterious, good looking, zen vibed and stunning cheekbones a la George

Ron definitely has massive honker and he’s lovably goofy - and you just know Elizabeth would sneak into the studio at night and re-record the drums when Ron’s not around…

Thank you, thank you for such a pithy kickstart to writing fiction. If this doesn't get me off my bum, nothing will.

I went back to uni a few years ago to sharpen up my technical writing. My assessment for the course was to write anything for 30 minutes. What a gift. I'd just spent my interview time explaining that I wasn't at all interested in exploring fiction or poetry. So I wrote about my beautiful grandmother.

That was the first 'free' writing I'd done in forever and I felt like a kid again, when I used to make up endless stories to amuse my friends (or so they said).

Since then I've bravely ventured into writing letters to the editor. A start...
