So Dame Anna Wintour is stepping down as Editor-in-Chief of US Vogue. It’s the true end of an era – the end of the Supereditor – but it’s certainly not the end of Anna (as we Fashion People call her).
Like Oscar Wilde’s death, rumours of her retirement have been exaggerated.
Ms Wintour is still Global Chief Content Officer of (the entire complete whole of ininity the end) Condé Nast – and Global Editorial Director of Vogue. Which means she oversees every Vogue, all 28 editions around the world.
So someone else will be reading every word of every single proof page of US Vogue – which I know she did, because I once had a hairdresser who used to do her afternoon blow dry when she was on holiday in St Barts (someone else did the morning one) and he told me she did it every day while he blew – but she’s still setting the standard.
THANK GOD.
Because I hold Dame Anna Wintour’s standards in the highest regard, which is why I get so infuriated by all the rubbish written and said about her.
(And don’t even start me on that ghastly book and film, with the word Prada in the title. Made me so furious. The ingratitude!)
What really makes me flap my baguette bag is that all the nonsense spouted about ‘Nuclear Wintour’ seems to be based on the fact that she’s not ‘lovely’.
She’s not smiley and friendly and touchy feely. She’s aloof and cool and sometimes, it’s said, in a work context, can be quite shouty and demanding.
So?
Does anyone expect the CEO of Ford to be nice? Is Jeff Bezos known for his goofy warmth to his staff? No, they are not. So why is the most important person in global fashion criticised, disliked and judged for it?
