This morning I saw an Insta post I loved showing POC (People of Colour) drag artists reclaiming the flag of St George, the official flag of England (as opposed to the Union Jack which represents Great Britain, as a whole).
The kveens felt compelled to do this as there is a horrible movement afoot in England at the moment for people to use the St George flag to express pure bigotry under the guise of ‘patriotism’.
They are hung on roundabouts and from lamp posts, to signify ‘no more immigrants wanted here’.
I hate it both for the attitudes it represents – and for stealing the flag I like to hang from my window and wave in the air whenever the England teams (women’s and men’s football) are playing a match.
I keep a small England flag on my desk left over from the last Men’s World Cup and today I added this word to it.
I would love to see WELCOME added to every flag that has been hung by bigots. And wouldn’t it look amazing appliqued onto big fabric flags?
