Because I live in a seaside town and work at home (in a room on my own talking to myself), my default dress code is Cool Casual, if not Overly Casual Casual (derelict).
Dear Maggie, So excited to have found you again! My weekend was never complete without having read your weekend mag column. One denim brand you might want to watch for is Seed Woman. They are a high street label in Oz and know their customer very well. Twice a year they release jeans in various cuts one of which always suits a more womanly figure. As someone whose shape never conformed to the cool of high end labels, these have been a gift from the style gods!
Hello Frockchic (great tag!) thank you for your lovely message. I'm glad we've re-met too. I've never stopped missing that column and this Substack has become the most wonderful replacement, so it's always brilliant when someone who remembers it links up. Can I be cheeky and ask you to tell any friends who you think might be interested? The more followers I get, both paid and unpaid, the more easily I can carry on doing it, as I won't have to be distracted by other work. Thanks for the jeans recc, also. I will check it out. Looking forward to more chats in comments (another thing I love about Substack) xxx
I have several pairs of forgivably stretchy, but decent looking narrow legged 'jeans' in various hues from Uniqlo. I thought I looked pretty OK (in central Victoria) until I shook the hay out of my hair and ventured down to Melbourne last week. Oh dear. My lovely style of choice is still available, but sits in an unloved corner of the basement floor. Wide legged pants now rule. I look like a Teletubby in them, so I went ahead and bought a dark denim pair in unfashionable narrow leg. They are in Heat-tech fabric, which I ignored as a load of tosh, but it turns out it's a gently brushed ever so fuzzy finish on the inside. Ahhhh.
Heat Tech is AMAZING. I wear it all through winter in various layers. I'm wearing it now! There is a pair of wide-legged jeans out there for you, if there are for me, but only if you care enough to be bothered. They aren't easy to find.
Mine is about 22cms from waist to CROTCH - we have been forgotten for years! I keep thinking low waist is coming back and it never does. The 90s were heaven for all of us short waisties.
It’s trying to find that sweet spot isn’t it? After 3 bubs I couldn’t bear the 5cm zip super low risers of the early 00’s. But the ultra highs of the last decade have been wretched on the perimenopause tummy. I’ve been rocking some oversized Dickies for a while but I’m hankering for some proper dark denim. How can one successfully rock chic without adequate denim?!?
I found the perfect Jean for me too! H&M. the more I think about it, the more I realise I enjoy wearing what I loved wearing during my early teens. Flares and gypsy skirts. Flared jeans look awesome. Glad you found yours!
I know exactly what you mean about the jeans! I too have recently, finally found the not too wide, not too heavy, not too high waisted jeans / denim pants from Trenery ( Australia obvs)! Now the challenge is really on for the perfect sneaker …
I work in a hospital. Today I wore what I thought was a chic blue striped oversized shirt with the collar reverse in white. As I stepped along the corridor to get my coffee from the canteen, feeling ‘no goat’s toe’, I realised I looked like I was wearing a nurse’s tunic…
"No goats toe" is a phrase used in Hiberno-English (Ulster Scots) to describe someone who thinks they are exceptionally good or the best at something. It's essentially an insult or a sarcastic remark, similar to "they think they're hot stuff". The phrase implies arrogance or overconfidence
I am LOVING this. I have a very good pal from around your way - Glasgow ma, Belfast pa, grew up in Newton Ards - so I'm going to surprise her with it xxx
I’m 6’ tall and hear a lot about Primark in a global tallgirl fashion chat. Apparently they do a lot of stuff that’s tallgirl friendly, so while I’m on hols in the UK next week I’m planning to find a Primark somewhere and test the theory.

For the perfect flared jean. Try the Zara Marine cut. More fitted at the top of the legs than yours. So flattering.
oooh thank you, I will look. My previously best jeans were from Zara, so I should have looked there first x
they all seem to be high waist.... see how I go round and round in circles?
My search continues for a jean that I can’t tuck my boobs into (im woefully short waisted) You’ve convinced me to not give up the quest!

This is so true! I had pants just like this when I was 14! That's how I know about the BUTTOCK CUPPING

and isn't the high-waisted thing a NIGHTMARE?
I just bought those too... for me, Adidas Gazelles with a thick sole. I will post about them soon xxx

Ha ha I'm sure you looked great - but please tell me more about 'no goat's toe'... It sounds marvellously Greek. I need to know!
Known as Camel toe, down here...
Far from Greek, it’s an old fashioned Northern Ireland expression
