Really enjoyed this. Ditto had been to Paris every year since my teens until Covid. Went back Feb last year for Joan Mitchell exhibition at Fondation LV and have been back 7 times since (& acquired Merci tote bag 🤣). Share your pain about Ashford, we live in Deal and have to go up the same line to St Pancras then back again 🥴
I love this piece. The brilliant dissection of your thought processes alongside the images of the items - that dress!!! - conveyed precisely the dilemma we now find ourselves in re. consumption. I wonder whether retail needs to become more like nature, something we observe and immerse ourselves in for the pleasure without taking anything away. Lovely writing, as always.
That dress is divine. But, but, no picture of the LV tote you did buy? Indulge us, please. And for a far away reader with no hope of getting to Paris this year, was the Rothko exhibit amazing?
Oh I felt like I was right there alongside you Maggie, struggling with the decision not to buy what you don’t ‘need’, but that dress was perfection! I guess the time will come when you look back in reflection with regret or just shrug your shoulders and say oh well there’s always another dress.
I’m going back to Paris in June for the first time in 20 years … can not wait. Merci is on my list and I think I’ll get those coffee cups. PS I was delighted to meet you at the Collette Dinnigan show at Le Louvre in 2004 and the only thing I missed from Sydney when I was living in Paris was your Good Weekend Column xx
Thanks for lovely comments, Josephine - your name is familiar! I made myself do all different things this time - I didn't want to go down a wormhole of memories of my old life. Didn't even allow myself to go to Angelina's!

Thank you!
Couldn't you just scream at Eurostar? That building just sitting there empty in Ashford!
Maggie you are the bomb ! Love Merci ! love Mark Rothko !
Have you run into Inspector Foyle in Hastings ?
Thank you for your musings ! X
thank you for this lovely comment! We don'/t see Inspector Foyle, but we always feel he's just around the corner...
That stripey orange top is the dream. May have to go on my own list of five for this year!
I regret the top... I would have worn it constantly!

I actually wish I'd bought that dress and the goddam top..... aaaarrrgh... and a tote bag. It's so hard being good isn't it?

The Rothko exhibit was transporting. I adored it. I will post a picture of the tote - thanks for the prompt!
