I love fashion exhibitions, but it does feel as though there is now too much emphasis on an 'immersive experience' and they forget that some of us actually want to look at the clothes. Please do give us a full report on Chanel, it looks incredible.
Hello Maggie, I'm one of your readers from the SMH days. I've so missed your brand of quirky and irreverent humour, and your insights into all things fashion. Thanks for visiting these exhibitions when I can't be there myself. I too would be fascinated by the one at the Museum of London, and would have ended up with a migraine at the others. I'm looking forward to reading about the other 6 !
Hello Mary! You are exactly the person I am doing this Substack for! It's not that easy getting the word out, I'm finding - so if you have any friends who you think might be interested, please tell them. I hope you enjoy it xxx
I Like the sound of the Jewish dressmakers of the East end. I worked in textiles in Sydney in the 90's and we still used Yiddish terms that must have been introduced back then.
I moved on into wine and one day I told my boss that I would be busy schlepping all my tasting samples back from a show so I would see him later. He just looked at me and said "Where would YOU hear a term like that?"
I love me a good fashion exhibition but unfortunately being on yhe other side of the world in NZ not too many make it here. I too would be frustrated at the rotating immersive experience, I want to be able to see the full garment at a pace that suits me and to be able to see all the detail and handstitching etc etc. Have you ever see the WoW show in NZ? Literal art made into clothes...

Have you heard of the podcast “Haptic and Hue”? They have a whole episode about the fabrics used on public transport in London. Fascinating stuff.
Don't know the podcast, but I have read various things about the fabrics over the years. They fascinate me.
